It's Holiday season! We're past Halloween and rolling right into Thanksgiving and Christmas time. As much as I don't love the cold weather I do love this season. I was talking with someone the other day, that I love the crisp air and colors of fall, but thoroughly enjoy the homey feeling Christmas decorations bring. I haven't decorated for Christmas yet, but it's coming sooner rather than later, so be on the lookout!
For now, I'm writing all about some of my favorite items that will be perfect for gift giving this year for the people in your life! These are all shops/items that I LOVE and let's just say they're all the best and have amazing owners to boot. I will be focusing on one shop for each post and I'm so thrilled to share them. Today I'll be sharing my love of Modern Makerie!

I bought my first wristlet from Modern Makerie this year and immediately fell in love with it! I have always been on the lookout for the perfect one and honestly I never really found one that I liked until now. It was petite and perfect to throw into the diaper bag, plus it had a few places to hold my oils that I carry with me. Kate (owner of Modern Makerie) recently sent me the one above and once again it's perfection! Not only are there places for my oils, but it holds all of my cards. It's the small things in life that make me happy. :)
I asked Kate a few questions about Modern Makerie and here's her answers!
What inspired you to start Modern Makerie?
I didn’t mean to start Modern Makerie actually. I’m a classically trained chocolatier; I was actually doing a job I loved. I was running the day-to-day at Cellar Door Chocolates and loved my job. I had a friend ask if I could make her a bag.. she knew I’d been sewing since I was a kid. She wanted two things; a bag that was cute and didn’t look like it was made in China. I made 100 bags that first month, just by word of mouth. I didn’t have a business name. The second month, I made 300 bags.
What’s your favorite piece and why?
My favorite. Ugh, it’s actually really hard. I still get pretty giddy over any size in a new fabric. It’s that maker soul, I think.. and ultimately I’m a fabric and color lover.
Who did you have in mind while creating your product?
My customers are mainly me. often time moms, who need their hands, they need things fast and convenient — but also well made and easy to clean. What I threw in was needing all those things, but doing it with something beautiful because I don’t believe you have to sacrifice one for the other. That’s how the wristlet happened. I needed a bag to take into target with just my essentials (phone, oils, money). I knew others must need this. I didn’t realize how many others, but it’s been great.
Describe your creative process from design to production.
The design process, that’s so hard. Sometimes it’s an idea I have in my head for 6-8 months. Other moments it's late night surfing the web and seeing the most fantastic pair of holographic pants.. then I immediately buy 10 yards of holographic fabric. The goal is always making something to last a long time and something that’s not larger than it needs to be. Square footage in my bag is precious, I have to make the most of it.
Thanks Kate for letting us in on your process!
If you're in the market for a wristlet seriously check out this beautiful shop, the bags are stunning and the attention to detail is impeccable. Go buy one or buy five because you're gonna love it, says the girl who's been scouring the interwebs for a while now.
Be sure to check out my other posts this week for more perfect gifts to give your loved ones. Happy shopping!
